Presence to increase data usage….critical for mobile operators!
January 14, 2009
The Power of Presence
Presence is a powerful network capability that is useful for consumers as a rich communication tool and for enterprises to enhance productivity. Bundled with existing contact list management, operators can easily and automatically enable Presence for their end users as a next step of mobile services evolution.
Presence complements new business models driven by open mobile eco-systems. Application developers for Android, Windows Mobile or iPhone can easily derive and use Presence to offer new user experiences by bundling with location, content delivery or gaming. Sharing presence across other operators or web IM networks will ensure that network presence does not become an isolated service offering and will achieve the same level of success as seen with location information. For operators, it simply means more data usage, justifying 3G and 4G investments.
How Presence applications increase data usage:
“I’m available”
“I’m in the air until 5:30ish!”
“I’m at the office and available on all devices!”
“Text me since I’m in a meeting!”
Integrated Buddy Lists
“I can see all my outlook contacts, my Facebook contacts and my contacts on my cell phone in one list, with their presence!”
Rich Messaging with content delivery
“My messages get to me, regardless of network or device!”
Location
“I see my friends are close by, maybe we can meet for lunch?”
Web 2.0 Integration – Aggregate Web IM Networks
“I can turn on my phone and be logged on to all my networks!”
Deliver Integrated Web Applications
“I just won that item on eBay! I’ll let everyone know!”
Driving Usage and Loyalty
To capitalize on the promise of presence-rich communications, mobile operators know they need a future-proof solution that allows for new IMS-based services on their existing 2G or 3G networks while ensuring a smooth transition to an all IP services core for WiMAX and LTE deployments.
By implementing an architecture such as Mavenir’s Integrated IMS solution, operators can accelerate the launch of new services, including Instant Messaging and Presence based on OMA SIMPLE standards. These applications are offered today with an integrated IMS core network, improving time to market and ROI for mobile operators. The same platform will deliver mobile voice and video services over an all IP network, replacing the need for legacy MSC.
The innovative platform blends these IMS services with legacy SMS, MMS, e-mail and next-generation Web 2.0 services to enhance the end user experience for messaging, social networking and content delivery. Consumers have the freedom to access services on multiple devices, enabling Fixed Mobile Convergence and, thereby, increasing loyalty. The platform is customizable and allows operators to launch new services at low cost while shaving the deployment date down to under six months; and, it can be enhanced for future offerings.
To summarize, converged messaging solutions – such as the Integrated IMS solution deployed by Mavenir – enable mobile operators to quickly increase network value by introducing presence as a key ingredient and entering the thriving services marketplace. The operator can offer new social networking services, provide access to 3rd party applications developers and capitalize on the explosive growth of IM quickly and efficiently.
Globally, several mobile operators are deploying these solutions and already generating revenues and profits.
Taking Mobile to VoIP!
January 9, 2009
The time has come.
It seems to me that there is a growing, yet critical need for providing an extension of mobile service above and beyond the mobile device, for instance over a broadband connection, inside the home. There are reports indicating over 40% of the usage is inside the home, where coverage degrades fairly rapidly. Some suggest 10% of people go back to Wireline phone because they cannot trust the coverage inside the home. This is the compelling reason for operators to look at options to supplement macro coverage.
Our SIP-based Mobile VoIP solution is similar in architecture to UMA, but lower cost, given a wide range of off-the-shelf SIP devices including SIP adapters for Analog phones, soft clients for PC and mobiles and SIP phones. Operators can even evolve UMA to Mavenir’s SIP based solution!
It’s time has come given the growth and the acceptance of VoIP in US. It is a growing market, directly impacting Wireline revenues and not impacting any wireless growth. We are also seeing incumbent service providers such as cable operators being more successful with providing VoIP as a complementary/bundled service than some well-known independent providers.
